As Jamie McIntosh, About.com Guide to Flowers, notes, the mailbox area is a "highly visible part of your property." As such, it deserves a planting to spruce it up. I have seen properties otherwise nicely-landscaped where the owners have ignored the mailbox area, instead leaving the mailbox all by its little old lonesome, a foreign object sticking out like a sore thumb.
Unless you sport an unusual mailbox that really makes a statement all by itself, I believe design-conscious homeowners
